In Short:

  • Push-to-Talk (PTT) is a communication system where you press a button to communicate with other devices tuned to the same frequency.
  • Push-to-Talk is primarily found in radios, but now also in (ATEX) smartphones.
  • PTT allows you to communicate directly with others, and you cannot talk over each other. This makes PTT a great solution for efficient communication.

What is Push-to-Talk?

PTT is a communication system where you press a button to talk. It is faster than calling and ideal for clear communication; with PTT, you cannot talk over each other. More on that shortly.

How does PTT work?

PTT works simply. You have a device, such as a radio or a smartphone, with a button that you press to speak. As soon as you press the button, the device transmits your voice to others in your network. They hear you immediately, without you having to dial a number first. Once you are done, you release the button, and they can respond.

An important feature of PTT is that you cannot talk over each other. This is because only one device can transmit on the radio frequency at a time; other devices tuned to this frequency can then receive the message. Simply put: when you speak, others can hear you. When you are talking, others cannot talk at the same time. Only when you stop can they respond. This prevents chaos and ensures clear communication in busy or dangerous environments.

In addition, many ATEX smartphones also support Push-to-Talk using a technology called PoC (Push-to-Talk over Cellular). This enables communication over mobile networks such as 5G, so you no longer need a separate radio. An ATEX smartphone can now handle many of the same tasks as an ATEX radio, but with PoC it can do so over a much greater range. For example, you can use PoC to communicate from the Netherlands with someone in Brazil. However, this does not mean that an ATEX smartphone is a better choice than an ATEX radio; it depends on your specific situation. If you are unsure what is best for your situation, we are happy to help.

Advantages of Push-to-Talk

  • Direct communication: Press the button and speak immediately. You do not have to wait for someone to pick up your call.
  • Clear communication: With PTT, you cannot talk over each other. One sender, one receiver (or multiple receivers).
  • Efficient communication: Quickly talk to multiple people at once. Communication becomes even more efficient when PTT is used exclusively for important messages.

Why choose a Push-to-Talk device?

PTT is reliable, fast, and safe. It is the perfect solution for communication in high-risk and industrial environments. It helps you respond quickly and makes the workplace more efficient.
At Cobic-Ex, we offer ATEX radios and ATEX smartphones that feature PTT functionality. This ensures reliable communication in hazardous environments.
