About Durabook

Durabook is a Taiwanese manufacturer of rugged Windows tablets and laptops. Two models in the current range carry ATEX/IECEx Zone 2/22 certification: the R8-EX and the U11-EX.

Durabook Explosion Proof Tablet Range

The R8-EX is the 8-inch tablet in the pair, weighing 880 g. It runs Windows 11 on a 12th-generation Intel processor. The casing meets IP66, MIL-STD-810H and a six-foot drop spec. The main battery lasts 8.5 hours. With the high-capacity battery you get up to 17 hours, usually enough for a full shift.

The U11-EX shares the same processor generation but uses an 11.6-inch display. Most customers pick it for work involving drawings, asset registers or CMMS, rather than only barcode scanning. Ingress, drop and MIL-STD-810H ratings match the R8. The standard battery lasts 10 hours, the high-capacity pack 20.

R8-EX and U11-EX, both ATEX Certified

Both tablets are fanless, thanks to Durabook’s Coolfinity thermal design. That matters in a Zone 2/22 context for two reasons. There is no fan pulling combustible dust through the chassis. There is also no fan motor that could act as an ignition source.

For Cobic-Ex this puts the R8-EX and U11-EX in the comfortable middle of the range. They have proper hazardous-area certification, full Windows, and good battery life. That makes them the primary field device, not a glorified scanner.
